Update

The commentary below is several years old. Currently (2007) my favourite places for Indian food in Cork are probably Little India on Washington Street for eat-in and Spice Route on McCurtain St for take-away; the Eastern Tandoori Restaurant on Emmet Square also deserves a mention, but they're quite pricey. In Douglas, both Radhuni and Lal Quila are excellent eat-in restaurants, and Radhuni also provides take-away food.

The Indian Palace - one of Cork's best kept secrets

The Indian Palace is a smallish restaurant on Princes' Street in Cork (between Oliver Plunkett Street and South Mall, opposite Clancy's). Don't let the rather tacky neon sign outside put you off; the decor inside is consistent with a fairly upmarket Indian restaurant, the atmosphere is very welcoming, the food is just amazing (and they have plenty of awards to show for it), and the service is good too (attentive without being intrusive).

Their pricing is also very reasonable; the normal spend for me and my friends seems to be about €20 to €25 a head, or a bit more if you get a starter (but the portion sizes are such that you'll only need a starter if you're really starving) including service charge and non-alcoholic drinks (I don't really know how their pricing for beer, wine etc compares to other restaurants, as not many of my friends drink; but the ones that do haven't complained so I would assume it's about normal); it's not nouveau cuisine either, for your €20 or so you generally leave feeling very stuffed and satisfied.

In summary, I'm a regular and very satisfied customer at the Indian Palace for the past few years and intend to keep returning. I have brought many friends there; I think I can honestly say every single one has left satisfied and intending to return (and certainly I don't think any of them ever felt the need to complain about any aspect of the food or service).

I would also like to point out that my only connection with the Indian Palace is as a very satisfied customer.

A takeaway service is also provided which I don't know much about; I would presume that the food is just as good, but somewhat cheaper.

The Indian Palace can be contacted on 021-4273690. Their website is at http://homepage.eircom.net/~indianpalace.

Another source of good Indian food is the Spice Route takeaway on McCurtain Street - they're open till 3am, and on my route home from town :) They can be reached on 021-4508382, and I particularly like their beef makhani dish.
